Stage Lighting Basics | Tips For Live Event Lighting

Stage lighting basics

When it comes to lighting, one of the critical things to keep in mind is that not all environments are created equally. Case in point: stage lighting. If you're trying to properly light a live event so that the performance itself is the star and that no element of the production is distracting, there are a number of important things you'll need to keep in mind.

Best Lighting Fixtures for Live Events Production

An efficient type of lighting fixture for live event production is called a clamp light. They're inexpensive, but their major benefit is that they are versatile - they can be easily mounted in a number of ways so that you can quickly change setups without limiting the event itself.

Other options include an Ellipsoidal, which is typically used as a front light to focus either a sharp or soft beam on the subject depending on your preferences. Fresnels are also common, which are great for bringing up the overall lightness in an environment so that you can fill in shadows in a way that isn't distracting.

Band Stage Lighting Techniques

One of the most important things to keep in mind when it comes to band stage lighting involves the fact that the event you're capturing is ultimately spontaneous in nature. This means that lighting needs to be as equally distributed as possible. If a musician wants to walk from one end of the stage to the other, you can't afford to have them in and out of the light source as they do.

As a rule of thumb, it's a good idea to have at least one light source devoted to each band member or other person on stage, with another two light sources on the left and right of the stage to create the fullest effect for the duration of the event.

What is Three-Point Lighting?

A three-point lighting system, as the term suggests, is one that uses lights in three distinct positions in order to adequately light a subject. The key light is the primary light source, the fill light is used to eliminate any shadows, and the backlight creates a rim of light around the subject. This helps create as much depth as possible in the image.
